THE LASTING LEGACY of Joe Louis.
Known as the “Brown Bomber”, an African American and the first black heavyweight champion in 22 years. Considered one of the greatest heavyweight boxing champions of all time due to the longest single reign as champion of any boxer in history: from 1937 to 1949, an almost twelve-year streak that set a new world record.
On June 22, 1938, at Yankee Stadium. Joe Louis and Max Schmeling had a heavyweight fight that morphed into Roosevelt vs. Hitler, Democracy vs. Fascism, and Good vs. Evil. Faced off in front of 70,000++ fans in a dramatic rematch after his only defeat two years earlier in 1936. Louis defeated Schmeling in two minutes and four seconds, knocking him out in the first round. The press seized on the victory as symbolic of democracy over fascism’s victory.
